Just a scenic 40-minute ferry ride away from the Lower Mainland, Sechelt offers the perfect blend of quaint small-town feel with easy accessibility to the draws of the city.Nature of the PositionReporting to the Manager of Financial Services, the Accountant is responsible for the maintenance of the District?s accounting records, financial management, budgetary management and operational control. Applying appropriate accounting principles and procedures to analyze financial information, the Accountant prepares accurate and timely financial reports and statements, and ensures appropriate accounting control procedures are established and documented. The Accountant ensures that the District?s accounting practices comply with legislative requirements and adheres to standards defined by the Public Sector Accounting BoardRequired Competencies Grade 12 (or equivalent) supplemented by completion of a bachelor?s degree (or equivalent) in an accounting program from a recognized university or technical institute Completion of the Chartered Professional Accountant (CPA) program A minimum of three (3) years of general accounting experience including financial statement preparation, payroll, accounts payable and receivable processes. An equivalent combination of education, training and experience may be considered. Knowledge of financial management theory, principles, practices and procedures Knowledge of computerized financial software and accounting systems Proficiency in Microsoft Office software, with advanced level proficiency in Excel and Word Ability to prepare financial statements in accordance with public sector accounting standards Ability to analyze and translate complex financial data into easily understood reports for a variety of stakeholders. Ability to exercise sound judgement, and employe critical and strategic thinking to solve problems Ability to work effectively within deadlines while maintaining accuracy and quality of work Ability to stay organized and productive amidst a varying workload with shifting priorities Ability to communicate effectively with internal and external contacts while maintaining customer focus Ability to demonstrate a high degree of confidentialityPreferred CompetenciesPrior accounting experience within a municipal government setting would be preferred. Experience using Vadim financial software and/or Dayforce HRIS platform would also be desirable.Working ConditionsThis is a regular, full-time unionized position with the BCGEU. Hours of work are 35 hours per week, Monday through Friday. The wage for this position is Grid 13, $40.66 - $45.19 per hour, plus a comprehensive benefits and pension package. Flexible work arrangements are available.
