Job Overview: The GIS Technician, under the direction of the Director of Planning and Development, will focus on a variety of technical activities relating to the management of the District?s GIS system. These include Administering the Districts GIS systems, management of geospatial data and analysis, development and implementation of Geospatial tools, processes and organizational strategy. This position will support the day-to-day operations of District staff as well to help the district?s current and long- range planning activities. This work will include technical and clerical work related to the administration and maintenance of the District?s GIS system and associated apps, preparation of maps and other visual materials, and development of GIS related apps to assist with District operations and asset management. This position will also assist with permitting handled by the department. Skills and Experience: We are seeking a collaborative, analytical, results-oriented individual with excellent knowledge of the principles and practices of Graphic Information System, including: University degree or post-secondary diploma in geographic information systems from a recognized institution Minimum of two years work experience with computer assisted mapping techniques, database systems, GIS programming methods, preferably in a municipal government setting Knowledge and experience working with ESRI ArcGIS and associated tools Sound knowledge of scripting languages, mapping principles, simple mathematics, coordinate geometry, drafting, and survey computations Complete proficiency with MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint and other common applications Detailed job specifications can be found on the District of Sparwood website at https://sparwood.ca/municipal-hall/employment-opportunities/.Salary and Benefits: This vacancy is a unionized position under CUPE local 2698. The 2024 hourly wage rate is $40.78 per hour for a Engineering/Planning Technician 1 and, as per the current collective agreement, includes a competitive range of vacation, health and wellness benefits.
