*PHS Community Services Society (PHS) is hiring a Mental Health Worker, Insite, Friday to Sunday 6PM-3AM!*
Mental Health Workers are the backbone of PHS. They are embedded within our housing projects and programs to support residents and participants with immediate, practical solutions to day-to-day needs. These positions acts as the first to respond in medical interventions including overdose response.
Opening its doors in 2003, Insite was the first sanctioned supervised drug injection site in North America (receiving federal exemption from Health Canada) and saves thousands of lives and millions of healthcare dollars each year. Operating in partnership with Vancouver Coastal Health, the Insite Supervised Consumption Facility is a welcoming, stigma-free, clean and safe environment for users to consume illicit drugs.

PHS hires from within. Mental Health Worker roles provide foundational skills ? many managers and senior staff running housing and programs formerly worked in these positions.
It?s a CUPE 5536 union position. Overnight and weekend premiums may apply.
*Responsibilities for the Mental Health Worker role at Insite include (but are not limited to):*
* Familiarity with a variety of drug overdose symptoms and appropriate response protocols and procedures a must.
* Uses analytical abilities to observe and respond to participants needs and attempt to mitigate potential emergency situations. Being knowledgeable that certain behaviours may be indicative of de-compensating behaviour. Uses logs, and care plans to document observations and provide input on appropriate courses of action.
* Listens and responds to participants concerns, questions and requests in a manner that conveys respect. Responsible for de-escalating hostile interactions between tenants. Escalates to higher authorities as necessary.
* Ability to demonstrate core competencies of the PHS mandate and approach to providing client centred care under a harm reduction model.
* Knowledge of mental health diagnoses and concurrent disorders.
* Knowledge of social justice and anti-oppressive practices and how they relate to the population served by the PHS.
* Safety and security measures
* Crisis intervention/de-escalation
* Working as part of an interdisciplinary team to provide services, and advocacy for our Downtown Eastside community participants
* General cleaning duties and sanitization of the program spaces
*Education and experience required:*
* You have a minimum of 1-2 years of work experience with marginalized populations.
* Education in social services and or related field, or relevant experience.
* Current First Aid and CPR certification is required.
* All successful candidates must complete a criminal record check upon hire.
An equal combination of education, training and experience is acceptable.
*Terms of employment*
Hours: Friday/Saturday/Sunday 6:00PM to 3:00AM {25.5 hours/week}. In this regular part-time position, you will have the opportunity to bid on additional shifts on your scheduled days off.
Training: This position will require some flexibility to attend training. The successful applicant will need to attend a general 4-day paid training January 14th-17th or January 28th-31st, plus two additional Insite specific paid training shifts.
Salary: $31.56 p/h, weekend premiums apply.
This is a unionized position under CUPE 5536.
Successful applicants will be required to complete a criminal record check.
