The Government of Alberta has increased its education budget by 4.5% in 2025-2026, and has allocated $184M to hire 4,000 new education staff. This includes teachers, bus drivers, and educational assistants. About $55M is set aside to address classroom complexity, which includes both the training and recruitment of educational assistants.

The Wild Rose School Board, which serves the area southwest of Edmonton, is laying off 46 educational assistants. The school board says the layoffs are due to federal funding delays related to Jordan’s Principle requests.

There are 200 K-12 schools currently over-capacity in Alberta, and a further 27 at 100% capacity, according to numbers from Alberta Education. The Province has committed to opening 90 new schools over the next three years, but the Alberta Teachers’ Association says additional staff and resources are needed immediately for overcrowded classrooms.

Ohpaho Secondary School opened in Leduc on September 24. The new school has 880 students and features a fine arts studio, industrial kitchen, production facility, outdoor classroom, and robotics lab.
