The proposed power plant will have a capacity of 100 MW of electricity.

Linde, a global industrial gases and engineering company, has signed an agreement to supply clean hydrogen to Dow’s Fort Saskatchewan Path2Zero project. The company will spend over $2B to build and operate the clean hydrogen and atmospheric gases facility. Linde’s complex will capture over 2M tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions each year. The facility is expected to be complete in 2028.

The Government of Canada, the Canadian Urban Transit Research and Innovation Consortium and the City of Medicine Hat have announced combined funding of over $198K to develop a zero-emissions transition plan for public buses in the city. The funds will also go towards identifying risks and barriers for electrification.

EverWind now has the green light for all 3 of its proposed wind farms and is on track to have them operational by 2026.

Brandon-based Maple Leaf Foods will split into two publicly-traded companies next year: a packaged goods company operating under the current name, and a yet-unnamed new pork company in Brandon. The new entity has a goal of growing production at the Brandon plant by up to 20%, which will mean new hiring both in entry-level and skilled positions.

Innovation Saskatchewan is providing nearly $600,000 to advance nuclear energy and subatomic physics research at the University of Regina. The funding supports three projects focused on leveraging advancements in Small Modular Reactors and attracting top researchers to the university.

The Government of British Columbia and several coastal First Nations have developed a new coastal marine strategy to support the long-term resilience of shared marine resources. B.C.’s ocean-based economy contributes around $21B each year to the province’s economy and supports more than 131K jobs.

The Government of Canada has released the Green Buildings Strategy, a plan to drive energy efficient improvements to homes and other buildings. The strategy aims to save Canadians money, create jobs, and reduce emissions. One part of the strategy is the Green Construction through Wood Program which provides funding for projects that showcase innovative uses of wood in green construction.

Calgary-based Orennia Inc., a predictive analytics company operating in the energy space, has launched ION_Ai, a software platform for decision making in the energy transition sectors.

Calgary-based Volt Lithium is on schedule to deploy its direct lithium extraction technology on a commercial basis in the Permian Basin in the US starting in Q3 2024.

The Government of Alberta is providing $44M through Emissions Reductions Alberta for 21 projects to reduce emissions across a range of sectors including agriculture, power generation, construction, and forestry along with others.  

Boston-based Kuva Systems has been awarded approximately US $3M from PrairiesCan to expand its market presence for its proprietary technology for methane emissions monitoring and mitigation. Kuva plans to add staff to its Calgary team with some of the funding.

Calgary-based Strathcona Resources Ltd. is moving ahead with the development of carbon capture and sequestration infrastructure on its oil sands facilities in the Lloydminster, Saskatchewan and Cold Lake, Alberta areas, following a financing agreement with the federal Canada Growth Fund that will provide up to $1.0B.

Four wind farms in Alberta have started operations through a successful partnership between the Capstone Infrastructure Corporation and the Sawridge First Nation. The Buffalo Atlee 1, 2, 3, and 4 Wind Farms add another 61 MW (megawatts) of green electricity capacity to the Alberta grid, enough power for approximately 26,000 homes every year. 

The City of Edmonton and the federal government are jointly providing $1.29M to develop a strategy towards the transition to a full fleet of zero emission public transit buses.

The Ville de Montréal is investing over $13M in expanding its city hall in the borough of LaSalle. The renovation project will be ongoing until the fall of 2025.

The Ville de Gatineau is investing $49M in renovating the Guy-Sanche library. In addition to doubling its size, the investment will help the building earn energy efficiency certification.

The Ville de Montréal began reconfiguring Henri-Bourassa Boulevard by adding reserved lanes in both directions over an 18-kilometre distance. One lane will be reserved for buses, and the other will be used for bicycles. The project is scheduled to be complete in 2027.

The Government of Canada has announced $2.2M in funding to the Town of Port Hawkesbury for upgrades to the Allan J. MacEachen Airport runway to help strengthen supply chain infrastructure as Cape Breton advances its green hydrogen, onshore and offshore wind industries.

Construction is underway on the Neweg Energy Project, a new $90M wind energy project southeast of Sussex. The site is expected to be fully operational by December 2024 and its six turbines will generate enough power for 8,000 homes.

Rio Tinto’s Diavik diamond mine experienced subsidence on the access road to one of the mine’s underground pits on July 4. Operations have been temporarily suspended while the event is investigated. The mine is 300km northeast of Yellowknife and has two major pits in a lake which uses dewatering and dykes to accommodate underground mining. There are plans already in place to close the mine in 2026.

The new Qajuqturvik Community Food Centre launched on July 8 in Iqaluit. The centre offers a food box program which provides steady income for Inuit hunters and affordable country food for shoppers. The program has experienced increased demand since it began in 2022.

Board members from Polar Knowledge Canada and Commissioners of the US Arctic Research Commission have agreed to continue collaborating on shared research priorities such as permafrost research, modelling and adaptation, data sharing and communications and public information.

The Government of Saskatchewan is providing $55,000 to the Conseil culturel fransaskois to enhance professional development for Francophone artists through workshops from July 2024 to January 2025. This funding is part of the Canada-Saskatchewan Agreement for French-language Services, which also supports various health programs and bilingual services.

The federal government is providing $21.2M to the Neeginan Centre, a collection of Indigenous organizations and programs located in Winnipeg's former Canadian Pacific Railway Station. The funds are offered through the Green and Inclusive Buildings Program, and will include upgrades to heating, lighting, and ventilation systems.

The City of Brandon has signed on to the federal Housing Accelerator Fund, and will receive $6.2M if it meets its housing targets. This fund helps municipalities fast-track new housing through zoning changes and other local initiatives. Brandon's goal is 56 new homes per year over the next three years.

Supply Chain Manitoba has developed a new assessment tool that will help small and medium-sized businesses increase their circularity – the reuse of materials and reduction of waste. The non-profit will pilot the tool this fall with 200 business in Manitoba and Saskatchewan.

The Government of Manitoba has launched a $25M electric vehicle rebate program, offering $4,000 for new EV purchases and $2,500 for used EV purchases. Vehicles must be purchased from Manitoba dealerships.

According to a recent report, Manitoba Hydro will need to spend billions in the coming years to replace or upgrade its infrastructure. The necessary repairs include transmission towers, generating stations, and distribution lines.

The Government of Alberta is providing $15M over five years to continue work at the existing Natural Gas Innovation Fund Accelerator’s Emissions Testing Centre program at the University of Calgary. The funding also supports live methane emissions testing space at Tourmaline and Perpetual Energy’s West Wolf Lake gas processing plant near Edson.

Entropy Inc., a Calgary-based global carbon capture and storage technology company, is entering the independent power producer market with a $47M clean energy modular power plant and a 15-year power purchase agreement (PPA) with Advantage Energy to supply its Glacier Gas Plant in Alberta.

The Government of Alberta has signed a carbon sequestration agreement with the partners of the recently announced Atlas carbon storage hub just east of Edmonton. Atlas can now apply for the necessary regulatory approvals following the storage agreement with the province including project approval from the Alberta Energy Regulator.

Entropy Inc., a Calgary-based global carbon capture and storage technology company, is moving ahead with its $127M Glacier Phase 2 carbon capture project in Alberta. The facility is expected to be operational in the second quarter of 2026.

Westbridge Renewable Energy Corporation, a global clean energy developer, has numerous solar and battery energy storage systems (BESS) in various stages of progress across Alberta. Westbridge has already obtained Power Plant and BESS Approval and a Substation Permit and License from the Alberta Utilities Commission for its Sunnybrook project in Special Area No. 2 in southern Alberta.

Production of carbon fibre from Alberta-sourced bitumen is set to increase through the bitumen-beyond combustion program at a new $10 million facility at the Edmonton Research Park. Alberta Innovates received the funding through  Prairies Economic Development Canada. The new carbon fibre testing facility will have open-access and is expected to be operational by early 2025.

The federal government is providing $39M in grants to support ten projects across six Alberta communities that were impacted by job losses as the power generation sector in the province transitioned away from coal to cleaner sources.

The federal government is providing $8.5M for seven hydrogen technology projects in Alberta and $1.656M to advance small modular reactor fuel technologies at the University of Alberta.

The University of Alberta and CVW CleanTech are partnering on a $1.4M research project to refine technologies for the recovery of rare earth elements from oil sands waste in Alberta.

Fifteen groups appealing World Energy GH2's environmental assessment approval to have over 300 wind turbines on the Port au Port Peninsula and Codroy Valley and a hydrogen-ammonia plant in Stephenville have had their appeal arguments denied by N.L.’s environment minister.

Carbonleo, a real estate developer, is investing $20M in developing green spaces and a pedestrian park on Lumières Avenue at the Quartier DIX30 shopping centre in Brossard. The project began in May and should be complete this fall.

Aluminerie Alouette completed refurbishing its anode baking furnaces at its plant in Sept-Îles. The total project cost is valued at $170M.

Groupe Désourdy, a contractor, began construction on the future construction waste sorting centre in Bromont. The $17.5M project is being funded by various partners, including the Government of Quebec. The sorting centre will be operational in late 2024.

Hydro-Québec is investing in constructing wind turbine facilities in the Saguenay-Lac-Saint-Jean region. A project implementation agreement valued at $9B was reached between the regional county municipality and two Indigenous communities.

Rio Tinto, an aluminum producer, is investing $375M in building a green aluminum production facility in Saguenay. The Government of Quebec is contributing $140M to this pilot project, which is scheduled to begin production in 2027.

The Regional County Municipality (RCM) of Rivière-du-Nord received $2.7M from the Government of Quebec to fund its Territoire laboratoire en transport innovant project. The project is aimed at fostering the development of advanced transportation.

The federal government is providing five $50K fellowships for post-doctoral candidates to do research in post-secondary institutions across the territories. Through the Polar Knowledge Canada Fellowship Program, the funding aims to improve understanding of northern ecosystems, connections between community health and environmental health, and advance sustainability in the North.

The Grays Bay Port and Road project in Nunavut has been revived, aiming to connect mineral deposits in Nunavut to southern Canada. The Canadian Infrastructure Bank has provided $3M to the project, which is anticipated to cost $1B. The project includes a deepwater port and a 230-kilometre all-weather road that connects to ice roads to Yellowknife. Permits will be under consideration until 2027, with construction commencing in 2030.

Construction has begun on Regina's new Breast Health Centre. The provincial government is providing $3.6 million for the center's renovations, staffing, and new diagnostic equipment. The new center will offer diagnostic imaging, specialist consultations, patient education, and post-treatment care. The center is expected to open this fiscal year.

The Federal and provincial governments are providing $327.8 million for projects that aim to enhance community power, clean water access, medical care, and more. Major initiatives include Saskatoon’s expanded Bus Rapid Transit system, SaskPower’s Distributed Generation Enablement Project for wind and solar energy, and a new water treatment plant in the Town of Rosthern.

SaskPower has partnered with First Nations Power Authority (FNPA) to find a proponent to develop a 100 MW solar generation facility in south-central Saskatchewan, targeting operation by late 2028. FNPA is looking for a company with at least 30% Indigenous ownership to design, construct, own and operate the new solar facility.

The Governments of Canada and Saskatchewan are jointly providing $1.6 million for new affordable housing units in Saskatoon for vulnerable individuals at risk of homelessness. The project will offer 23 individuals affordable housing with access to health supports and daily services managed by SaskNative Rentals Inc., Saskatoon Crisis Intervention Services, and Prairie Harm Reduction.

The governments of Canada and Manitoba are providing a combined $11M in green technology grants to 32 recipients across the province. Twenty-four of these are farms transitioning from carbon-intensive fuels. The others are housing developments or municipal projects.

Research Manitoba and the Canada Foundation for Innovation are providing $2M to expand the greenhouse facility at Assiniboine College's Brandon campus. This will allow the college to increase its research on climate change and food insecurity.

The Government of Canada has provided over $3.1M to VMAC, a Nanaimo-based air compressor manufacturer, to enable more sustainable transportation options and a competitive local economy. These funds will go towards expanding VMAC’s manufacturing facility, installing new machines, implementing a market plan and hiring more staff.

On June 27 the Government of British Columbia announced that BC Hydro will now offer rebates for the installation of solar panel and battery energy storage systems. Each of the rebates will offer up to $5K once they become available later in July.

The Government of Canada has provided $190K through the Natural Infrastructure Fund to the Lower Nicola Indian Band to revitalize its natural green spaces. The funding will support planting of trees, shrubs, flowers, and grasses across the reserve.

E3 Lithium is estimating that the capital cost for its Clearwater lithium brine project will be approximately CAD$2.47B following the completion of a pre-feasibility study and delineation of the lithium brine reserve potential in Alberta.

Thiozen, based in Pasadena, California, has secured $3.2 million from Emissions Reduction Alberta and Alberta Innovates for a clean hydrogen technology project aimed at sour natural gas streams in Alberta.

dynaCERT Inc., a developer of carbon emissions reduction technologies, is supplying eighty-four HG1 HydraGEN™ Units to a drilling contractor through its dealer, Alberta-based Simply Green Distributors Inc.

The City of San Diego has selected Edmonton-based Stantec, a global engineering and design company, to continue providing program management and technical engineering services for the multi-billion-dollar Phase 2 of its Pure Water San Diego water reuse program.

The N.S. Government has announced $3.3M in combined federal/provincial/municipal funding for a new active transportation network in Wolfville that will include over 10 kilometres of multi-use trails. The project will connect to the provincial Blue Route cycling network.

Varennes Carbon Recycling, which will produce biomethanol and green hydrogen, is building its plant near Varennes. The project of more than $1.3B is being funded in part by the governments of Quebec and Canada and should be finished in late 2025.

Cloriacité Développement, a real estate developer, began construction on Cloria Lévis, a residential building with 166 apartments in Lévis. The total construction cost is estimated at $50M, and the delivery is scheduled for the fall of 2025.

The federal government is providing up to $25M to NorZinc Ltd., to construct an all-season road from Liard Highway 7 to the Prairie Creek mine site in the NWT. Once built, the roadway will allow for the transportation of critical minerals from the mine, greater access for local Indigenous communities, and improved tourism to national park areas.

According to the Government of Saskatchewan’s weekly crop report, seeding is 99 percent complete. However, cooler temperatures and excess moisture are delaying crop development. Fall cereals, spring wheat, and oilseeds are developing more slowly than usual.

The Water Security Agency is renewing its Agricultural Water Management Fund to aid agricultural producers and local governments in developing water management projects. Applicants can receive up to $95,000 per project through a cost-sharing model, covering costs for technical support, engineering, and mitigation works. Eligible recipients include individuals, corporations, First Nations, rural municipalities, and various watershed and conservation groups in Saskatchewan.

The Government of Saskatchewan is providing nearly $1 million this year to medSask, a medication information service at the University of Saskatchewan. medSask supports healthcare professionals and the public with medication questions through a helpline staffed by licensed pharmacists. The funding includes approximately $688,000 in base funding, an increase of nearly $288,000 from last year, plus an additional $305,000 for expanded training and resources for pharmacists.

Carbonethic Holdings Inc. has launched a new forest management project with Dease River First Nation in British Columbia. The goal of the project will be to enhance sustainable forest practices while engaging with the community. Using advanced technologies, the project will improve over 1.1M hectares of land in the Cassiar Forest for the generation of removal and avoidance carbon credits.

The Governments of Canada and British Columbia have promised more than $39M through the British Columbia Salmon Restoration and Innovation Fund to protect salmon in the province. Nearly $6M will go towards projects located on Vancouver Island.

The British Columbia Centre for Innovation and Clean Energy is spending $2.76M on a pair of new ocean-based carbon removal projects. The two projects include a seaweed biomass monitoring solution along BC’s coastline and an ocean alkalinity enhancement trail in Burrard Inlet.

Neoen, a global renewable energy developer, is planning to have its Fox Coulee solar farm in Starland County fully operational in the next few weeks. The site will produce approximately 100 Gigawatt hours of green electricity per year, enough for 20,000 homes.

Shell Canada Products is moving ahead with two carbon capture and storage projects in Alberta. The first at Fort Saskatchewan, named Polaris, and the Atlas Carbon Storage Hub, in partnership with ATCO EnPower, are both expected to be operational in late 2028.

Calgary-based CVW CleanTech Inc. is partnering with four First Nation and Métis communities from the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo to create a joint venture that will cooperate on the recovery and processing of valuable chemical compounds from oil sands tailings ponds in the Athabascan oil sands region.

Calgary based Hempalta Corp, an industrial hemp technology venture, is introducing biochar derived from industrial hemp to the market. The biochar is produced by recycling industrial hemp biomass processed at the company's production facility in Calgary or onsite at farmers' fields.

Calgary-based LithiumBank Resources Corp. is planning further technical work to characterize the chemistry of resources underlying its Park Place resource project in Alberta.

The Otipemisiwak Métis Government has opened the Salay Prayzaan Solar Farm at Métis Crossing near Smoky Lake.

Calgary-based Enbridge and a consortium of six Saskatchewan First Nations are advancing the 200 megawatt Seven Stars wind energy project near Weyburn, SK. It will be developed, constructed and operated by a wholly owned indirect subsidiary of Enbridge.

The Alberta Utilities Commission has approved two smaller sections of a proposed solar power facility by Texas-based Proteus near Hays, citing the impact on native grasslands and wildlife as the justification for rejection of the larger central portion of the project.

Broccolini started construction on a 1.3M-sq.ft. warehouse in Innisfil owned by DSV Solutions, a Danish transport and logistics company. It is expected to open in summer 2025 and will create 225 jobs.

Siemens, an industrial technology company, plans to invest $14M in expanding the production of various ranges of electrical products at its plant in Drummondville. This initiative will secure 350 current jobs and create more by 2027.

Shango, a multinational company in the mining industry, is proceeding with building its ball milling plant in Port-Cartier. Ultimately, the project is expected to create 75 to 100 jobs.

ArcelorMittal, a mining company, is investing $200M in its plant in Port-Cartier, which will produce high-purity iron that will reduce carbon emissions when used

The Government of Quebec is investing over $6M in rebuilding the overpass in Sainte-Angèle-de-Monnoir. Construction Longer Inc., a general contractor from Sherbrooke, is carrying out the project, which should be complete in November.

Prével, a real estate developer, began the third phase of its 20-storey residential project named Esplanade Cartier in the borough of Ville-Marie in Montréal. The first tenants will be able to move in starting in the summer of 2026.

The federal government expanded the Critical Minerals List to include high-purity iron, which is used to make steel with a lower carbon footprint. The move may encourage more mining acitivity in Nunavut in the future.

The Government of Saskatchewan and the Government of Canada are providing $1.1M to build a one-storey affordable housing fourplex in Saskatoon. Construction is expected to be completed in spring 2025.

The Government of Saskatchewan marked the opening of three Early Years Family Resource Centres in June to offer early years programming and parent supports. The new centres are located in Regina, Tisdale and Kindersley.

The Government of Saskatchewan is allocating nearly $90,000 to two health programs for French-speaking residents. In 2024-25, Réseau Santé en français de la Saskatchewan will receive funding for interpretation services during medical appointments . TAO Tel-Aide's French-language mental health support line will get funding to assist residents experiencing psychological distress.

The Government of Saskatchewan is providing $600,000 over three years through the Innovation and Science Fund to support the High-altitude Aerosol, Water Vapor and Cloud satellite mission at the University of Saskatchewan. The project aims to predict extreme weather, monitor for disasters and provide new data to understand the factors contributing to climate change.

The Governments of Canada and British Columbia have contributed $5.45M to the Port of Prince Rupert to fund new zero and low-emission heavy-duty trucks. These trucks will reduce emissions and support sustainability in the province’s transportation sector. The project will run until the end of 2026 and provide important information about the vehicle’s performance, capabilities, and feasibility.

Island Coastal Economic Trust is providing Salish Sea Regenerative Farm Society with $50K to open a six-acre urban farm in Sechelt. The goal of the project is to produce local food and build a circular food system for the community. The farm will create employment and education opportunities for 15 Indigenous youths each summer.

ConnectX a Calgary-based cleantech startup, is planning to use more than $200,000 of equity investment from Startup TNT angel investors and its venture capital fund, TNT Capital, to add staff to its team in early 2025.

Calgary-based Summit Nanotech, a lithium brine extraction technology company, is partnering with Zelandez to develop processes to streamline the production of battery grade lithium.

Calgary-based Volt Lithium Corp., a lithium brine technology company, has added  technical and financial expertise to its Canadian and US operations.

Camber Energy, a Houston, Texas, based energy technology company, is testing a new lithium titanate oxide battery storage system in a pilot project at Conklin, in partnership with an unidentified major telecom provider.

The City of Cold Lake has received a $2.92M grant from the province through the Alberta Municipal Water/Wastewater Partnership. The funding will be used to construct a new $34M wastewater treatment facility.

NS Power is gearing up to build battery systems at 3 sites (Bridgewater, HRM, and Kings County) at a cost of about $354M to help the province replace fossil fuels with renewable energy sources. Regulators approved the expenditure and construction is expected to start soon and be operational by 2026.

EverWind is planning to build a series of wind farms with close to 500 turbines at three sites in central N.S. to produce green hydrogen and ammonia in Point Tupper. About 1,000 jobs are expected during construction, which could begin in 2026, and up to 100 permanent positions during the 35-year project lifespan.

Saint John Energy is seeking proposals from developers to build and operate a solar farm in the city. The utility states that the time is right as costs and efficiency of solar panels improve. It is hoped that the winning bid would be picked in the fall.

Westinghouse Electric Company LLC. opened their Canadian Global Engineering Hub in Kitchener, expected to create 100 engineering jobs by 2025

The Ville de Granby will invest $17M by 2030 in implementing its plan to reduce greenhouse gas emissions

PNCW Ligne de transmission, a limited partnership of the Cree First Nation of Waswanipi, received $70M from the Government of Quebec to build an electrical and fibre optic transmission line from the community up to the Windfall mining project

The Ville de Candiac began construction on its future public works building. The $30.5M project will take just over a year to complete and is designed to qualify for LEED certification.

Montoni and Montez Corporation, two real estate developers, and Fonds immobilier de solidarité FTQ are investing $95M in building an eco- industrial park in Châteauguay. The project should be complete in the summer of 2025.

The Centre intégré universitaire des soins et services de santé de la Capitale-Nationale will invest more than $46M over two years in decarbonizing 19 facilities. Among other things, the centre will replace heating systems.

Scierie St-Michel is a lumber mill that processes soft wood in Saint-Michel-des-Saints. The company received over $3.1M through Quebec’s ÉcoPerformance program to replace its propane kiln with an electric version to reduce its GHG emissions.

The Régie des matières résiduelles du Lac-Saint-Jean, a waste management service, is investing $15M in making improvements to its sorting centre in Roberval. Renovations are in progress, which will be complete in November.

The federal and Yukon governments are providing over $5.1M for a new sewage lift station in Watson, Yukon. The sewage lift station will support residential development for Watson Lake and the Liard First Nation.

The Government of Canada is providing $619,625 through Canadian Northern Economic Development Agency towards T???ch? Investment Corporation’s solar farm project at STLLR Gold’s Colomac Mine camp site, NWT. Solvest, a Yukon-based solar company, will install solar panels and energy storage at the site as well as train staff on operation and maintenance. The equipment will be trucked to the site in 2025.

The federal government revised its Critical Minerals List to now include high-purity iron, phosphorous and silicon metal. These minerals, which are used in electronic chips, green steel, fertilizers, and batteries, are deemed critical to Canada’s energy transition.

The federal government has provided over $353,710 for Fort Province-based Big River Services Centre LP to research the potential of renewable kinetic energy on the Mackenzie River. The Canadian Hydrological Turbine Testing Centre will lead research in Fort Providence, Fort Simpson, Wrigley and Jean Marie River. Four local interns will be hired.

The Government of Saskatchewan is providing support for several new justice and policing initiatives. The funding includes $4.7M for improved courtroom safety measures and $7M to establish the Saskatchewan Marshals Service and its headquarters in Prince Albert.

The Government of Saskatchewan's Water Security Agency is investing $1M in water infrastructure across the Churchill, Saskatchewan, and North Saskatchewan River watersheds. The projects include dam upgrades and structure replacements that will help ensure a sustainable and reliable water supply to communities in northern Saskatchewan.

Recent data from Statistics Canada shows that travel spending in Saskatchewan increased by $450 million in 2023, driven by a rise in visits from both domestic and international travelers. The Conference Board of Canada projects that tourism revenues will continue to grow, with Saskatchewan expected to reach approximately $3.57 billion in annual visitor expenditures by 2028.

The Government of Canada is providing $6M to the Harry J. Enns Wetland Discovery Centre for energy-efficient repairs and upgrades. The interpretive centre is located on the edge of the Oak Hammock Marsh Wildlife Management Area, north of Winnipeg.

BC Hydro has announced that it will construct more than $1.25B in capital projects throughout Burnaby over the next 10 years. The involved construction projects are expected to create thousands of jobs over the period.

The Fish and Wildlife Compensation Program has provided nearly $2M to fish and wildlife conservation programs in the Peace Region. These funds will support 24 projects across the region.

The Government of British Columbia is providing the Nelson-based Youth Climate Corps B.C. with $3M to hire more young people in jobs that address climate change. The group works with local governments and First Nation communities to build youth climate leadership in wildfire risk reduction, local food security, energy efficiency, ecosystem restoration and community engagement.

Canada Energy Regulator approved the Inuvialuit Energy Security Project Ltd. application to install and operate a natural gas plant and transport compressed natural gas and other fuels. The energy plant is estimated to provide 25 direct and 50 indirect permanent full-time jobs, and contract work for 50 years. Priority will be given to local workers and businesses.

The City of Edmonton will provide up to $20M in up-front financing for energy retrofits to about 300 homes and 16 commercial buildings over four years. The program includes insulation upgrades, heat pumps and solar panels, for example. Loans will be paid back through the owner’s property tax account over as many as 20 years.

Énergir chaleur et climatisation urbaines (ÉCCU), an Énergir subsidiary that distributes thermal energy, is receiving nearly $10M from the Government of Quebec for a project to help reduce greenhouse gases in Montréal

The Ville de Montréal could invest up to $40M in planting trees in the east end of the city. The Government of Canada will invest $27M in the project, which is enough to plant 230,000 trees and 57,000 shrubs.

The Stanstead Arts Centre will invest at least $4M in the Théâtre sans frontières to renovate the building, which will include modernizing the auditorium with 320 seats. The Government of Canada is contributing $2.1M.

The federal and provincial governments are providing $1.3M to three northeast Saskatchewan communities. The funding is part of the province’s green infrastructure initiative and will aid in decommissioning landfills and reclaiming land for future use.

SaskPower is allocating $1.6B to support the modernization and decarbonization of the provincial electricity system. The company will also commission the Great Plains Power Station in operating a battery energy storage system and adding to renewable energy capacity.

Winnipeg Transit is planning to contract an Alberta company to design and build a hydrogen-generation station for its new zero-emission buses. The $9M project will generate hydrogen using methanol, which is already in use in the city for sewage-treatment processes.

A new, 103-room, 6-storey Marriott hotel has had its rezoning application approved in Langford. The hotel is estimated to create between 30-40 jobs.

BC Transit will be purchasing 66 new electric buses and installing 134 electric bus charging points over the next two years. The charging ports will be installed in Chilliwack, Kamloops, Kelowna, the Regional District of Nanaimo, Nelson, Powell River, Sunshine Coast, Victoria, and Whistler. The funding comes from a joint federal and provincial package of $395.5m announced in July 2023.

The $30m project will receive $16m in provincial and federal funding and will reduce the community's reliance on diesel by approximately 3,300 tonnes of GHG emissions per year. Construction is slated to begin by August and be operational by October 2025.

The Government of Alberta, through Alberta Innovates, is providing $1.2M to the University of Alberta for laboratory and mathematical analyses as part of a collaborative project with Vortex Energy Corp. and Keyera Corporation. The project will develop parameters for hydrogen storage in the salt caverns proposed to be developed at the Robinsons River Salt Project in Newfoundland.

Collège Saint-Charles-Garnier, a secondary school in Québec, is investing more than $5M in the construction of a building for sports activities. Construction will begin in June, and the project will be delivered in the fall of 2025.

Énercycle, which specializes in waste management, awarded a contract to Therrien Entrepreneur Général in Trois-Rivières to build an administrative centre in Saint-Étienne-des-Grès. The $8.2M project should be finished towards the end of the year.

FNX-Innov, an engineering firm, reached an agreement with the Ville de Québec to build a facility for recycling construction waste and processing contaminated materials. The implementation of the project is estimated at over $12M.

The federal governments’ 2024-2025 fiscal budget includes $5B in loan guarantees for Indigenous communities looking to develop natural resource and energy products. The 2024/25 budget also includes $918M for Indigenous Services Canada and Crown-Indigenous Relations and Northern Affairs Canada, $89M to improve road access, $175M for First Nations emergency management, $467M for First Nations and Inuit-led policing.

The Government of Saskatchewan is providing $42M to support over 60 key water infrastructure projects through the Water Security Agency. The projects will focus on developing sustainable and reliable water supplies throughout the province.

The Government of British Columbia is committing $55.5M to plant 50 million trees in 2024. Natural Resources Canada is also contributing $19.5M to the efforts as part of the Forest Ministry’s reforestation program. More than 10 billion trees have been planted since the program began in 1930.

Imperial Oil expects to open a $720M renewable diesel facility, currently under construction, in Strathcona County in 2025. The Government of Alberta has granted Imperial conditional approval for a tax credit estimated at about $70M under the Agri-Processing Investment Tax Credit program.

US-based Air Products is planning to build a network of permanent, commercial-scale hydrogen refueling stations along Highway 2 from Edmonton to Calgary. The stations will be equipped to serve heavy-duty vehicles, such as commercial and municipal trucks and buses, as well light-duty hydrogen fuel cell cars. Each station will be able to fuel up to 200 heavy-duty trucks or 2,000 cars per day.

The Alberta Utilities Commission has conditionally approved Alderson Solar, a 100 megawatt solar project by HEP North America near Suffield. Construction plans for the project are expected to be filed in August 2024.

The federal government and State of Alaska signed an agreement to stop commercial and recreational fishing of chinook salmon to support the Yukon River chinook salmon run recovery. The number of chinook salmon returning to the Yukon River to spawn has dropped significantly over the last few years. Up to 95% of the migrating species are caught by commercial fisheries.

The Wekweètì winter road is expected was closed on April 6, the earliest road closure on record and the Gamètì? winter road is expected to close soon. The road opened on March 22, providing an operational period of two weeks. Usually, the road is open for a month. Several NWT communities are fly-in only at other times of the year and use the winter roads to bring in up to a years’ worth of supplies.

Natural Resources Canada project that expenditures spent on mining exploration in 2024 will increase in the NWT and Nunavut and decrease in the Yukon. The Province of Manitoba is providing $3.3M to NiCan Ltd. towards development projects. NiCan is conducting nickel mining exploration near Snow Lake, within the Grass River Provincial Park. The Wilderness Committee is concerned about impacting caribou living in the region, creating contentions between development and environmental health.

Imperial Oil Ltd. is ceasing operations for three months on its pipeline running between Gretna and Winnipeg terminal to conduct repairs. Gasoline, diesel, and jet fuel provided by Imperial Oil in Winnipeg are currently unavailable. The Manitoba government will provide a table of alternative fuel suppliers in the meantime.

White Bear Films, an Ojibway production company based in Winnipeg, is filming a re-imagining of the 1984 film Once Were Warriors. The project, titled Many Wounds, tells the story of a young indigenous man living in Winnipeg’s North End Neighbourhood, and is slated for completion this spring.

Pimicikamak Cree Nation, a northern Manitoba First Nation located approximately 550 km from Winnipeg, declared a state of emergency on March 8 in response to a nursing shortage. Only 4 of 13 nursing positions were staffed. The band has a population of more than 9,000 people, including more than 6,000 living on-reserve.

The federal government approved the Inuvialuit Energy Security Project Energy Centre in the Inuvialuit region, NWT. The energy centre will convert natural gas into fuel to be used for heating and power, reducing local reliance on imported fuel, including diesel. The energy centre will also provide local employment opportunities.

The Yukon government is preparing for the 2024 wildfire season, starting with funding from the 2024-2025 territorial budget. This year, there will be 24 wildfire crews, 75 initial-attack firefighters, and 40 staff managing crews and aircraft across the territory.

The Giant Mine Remediation project in the NWT has not yet reached its northern or Indigenous employment targets despite providing hundreds of jobs. From 2022 to 2023, the Indigenous employment target of 25% to 35% was not met, with only 18% Indigenous employment achieved. From 2022 to 2023, a northern employment target of 55-70% also fell short with only 36% northern employment achieved.

The federal and provincial governments are investing $60 million to upgrade the Hudson Bay Railway and redevelop the Port of Churchill. The Arctic Gateway Group, a partnership of 41 First Nation and Bayline communities, will utilize the funds for capital investments in repairing and maintaining the rail line. This project is anticipated to generate 60 to 70 jobs in Northern Manitoba.

The wildfire season in the Northwest Territories is expected to begin earlier than usual this year. Fire officials plan to bring in staff and resources sooner to assess and smother the holdover fires currently burning underground.

The Yukon and Tr’ondëk Hwëch’in governments jointly conducted a damage assessment of the 2023 flooding at Ch'ëdähdëk Forty Mile Historic Site. Following the assessment, a Request for Proposals has been issued to design a conservation plan, explore building repair options, and seek input to mitigate possible future flooding.

The provincial government will not issue an environmental license for Sio Silica's proposed sand extraction project in southeastern Manitoba. The Calgary-based company had planned to drill up to 7,700 wells in the area over a period of 24 years, but the Province rejected the proposal due to environmental risks.

The federal government is providing $99,999 to Diamonds de Canada Ltd. for purchasing a laser diamond cutting machine to boost the Northwest Territories' local diamond manufacturing industry. Purchasing the cutter will support NWT businesses in producing finished diamonds from raw diamonds mined in the territory, rather than shipping raw diamonds out of the territory to be finished.

The Province of Alberta’s moratorium on approving wind and solar power projects is lifting at the end of February after nearly seven months. The end of the moratorium will follow the Alberta Utilities Commission’s inquiry on land use and reclamation of renewables projects. When completed, the inquiry will report to the government on how to develop renewable power in the province.

EPD Renewables’ $600M wind farm has begun full operations 180 km north of Medicine Hat. The wind farm includes 67 turbines across 60K acres of land. At full capacity, the wind farm will generate 297 megawatts. The construction of the turbines employed 400 people and its operations will continue to employ 10 full-time staff.

The Alberta Investment Management Corp. (AIMCo) has set up a $1B fund dedicated to investing in the global energy transition and decarbonization sectors. AIMCo invests on behalf of pension, endowment, insurance and government funds in Alberta and manages more than $158B in assets.

Enerkem Inc. is shutting down production at its Enerkem Alberta Biofuels plant in northeast Edmonton. The facility began operating in 2010 and had a 25-year agreement with the city to turn non-recyclable municipal waste into ethanol for fuel. The facility employed 56 people and was intended to demonstrate refuse-derived fuel technology at a commercial scale.

The Government of Alberta has signed a memorandum of understanding with the Government of Colorado regarding energy and carbon management. Under the memorandum, the two governments will align and improve their regulations, increase their information sharing in key energy and environmental areas, and enhance their collaboration.

The Yukon government is opening a warming centre from March 18 to May 1 this year in downtown Whitehorse at the Jim Smith Building. The centre will be staffed with two onsite workers and one outreach worker for community support and wellbeing.

The Yukon government is raising the territory's minimum wage from $16.77 to $17.59, effective April 1. The 2023 Consumer Price Index for Whitehorse determined the 4.9% wage increase. The increase is an effort to support lowest-paid workers keep up with the cost of living.

According to a Northwest Territories government’s flood after action review report, the 2021 flood season resulted in an estimated $40M in damages across six communities. Approximately 100 homes, 30 businesses, six non-government organizations and community infrastructure were damaged. Hundreds of residents from impacted communities were evacuated. The report also identified a need for job-specific training in emergency management.

The federal government and City of Whitehorse are providing over $4.5M and about $2.47M, respectively, to upgrade the Canada Games Centre in Whitehorse. The pool area’s HVAC and insulation will be upgraded.

The Government of Manitoba is adding 36 acute care beds at the St. Boniface Hospital in Winnipeg, an effort to reduce wait times and emergency room overcrowding. The first ten beds will open in March and the remainder should be operational within a year.
