*Job Description*
We are seeking a dedicated and detail-oriented Phlebotomist to join our healthcare team in Markham. The successful candidate will be responsible for collecting blood specimens from patients, ensuring accuracy in sample collection and handling, and maintaining a clean and safe environment. The role involves direct patient interaction, so excellent interpersonal skills, compassion, and a commitment to high-quality patient care are essential.
*Key Responsibilities*
* *Specimen Collection:* Perform venipuncture and capillary blood collection following established protocols, ensuring patient comfort and safety.
* *Sample Handling:* Label, process, and transport blood samples accurately to the laboratory, maintaining strict adherence to chain-of-custody procedures.
* *Infection Control:* Adhere to strict infection control and safety protocols, ensuring the proper disposal of biohazard materials and maintaining a sterile work environment.
* *Patient Care:* Provide clear instructions to patients, answer questions, and address any concerns to reduce anxiety during the blood draw process.
* *Record Keeping:* Accurately document patient information, sample details, and procedural data in compliance with healthcare regulations and organizational standards.
* *Equipment Maintenance:* Ensure that all collection equipment is clean, functional, and properly maintained. Report any malfunctions or discrepancies promptly.
* *Team Collaboration:* Work collaboratively with laboratory technicians, nurses, and other healthcare professionals to support efficient patient care and smooth laboratory operations.
* *Quality Assurance:* Participate in ongoing quality improvement initiatives, including training updates and procedural audits, to maintain high standards of practice.
*Job Requirements*
* *Certification & Licensing:*
* Valid Phlebotomy certification recognized in Ontario.
* Current registration with the appropriate regulatory body.
* *Education & Training:*
* High school diploma or equivalent required.
* Completion of an accredited phlebotomy training program.
* *Experience:*
* Previous experience in a clinical, hospital, or laboratory setting is preferred.
* Proven ability to perform venipuncture and handle challenging patient situations.
* *Technical Skills:*
* Proficiency in various blood collection techniques (venipuncture, capillary draws, etc.).
* Familiarity with electronic health records (EHR) and basic computer skills.
* *Interpersonal Skills:*
* Excellent communication and customer service skills.
* Ability to work effectively under pressure and manage stressful situations with a calm and compassionate approach.
* *Compliance & Safety:*
* Strong understanding of health and safety regulations, including proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE) and biohazard handling.
* Commitment to confidentiality and adherence to patient privacy laws (e.g., PHIPA).
