The City of Winkler’s water treatment expansion will be operational by fall 2025. Once fully online, the facility's treatment capacity will increase to about 110 litres per second and raise the recovery rate of raw water from approximately 70% to the low 90s.
EnerPure Inc., a Winnipeg-based recycling and energy transition company, completed their 15-year recycling technology development project. The $40M project was funded through provincial and federal grants in addition to fund-raising initiatives. The recycling company is aiming to deploy 21 recycling plants and reduce cumulative green house gas emissions by one million tonnes within six years.

The federal government is not renewing the contracts for 800 Public Health Agency of Canada employees across Canada, including 245 workers at the National Microbiology Laboratory in Winnipeg. Contracts with temporary workers will not be renewed as funding for COVID-19 response ends. The federal government’s Youth Employment and Skills Program will begin accepting applications for the 2025-2026 fiscal year on January 27, 2025. With $13.5M in funding, the program aims to create 1,200 jobs and help address labour shortages in Canada’s agriculture and agri-food sectors. According to Farm Credit Canada (FCC), demand for food and beverage manufacturing jobs in Canada declined in 2024 from 2023. In food manufacturing, job vacancies fell by 32.8% and employment fell by 4.7%. In beverage manufacturing, job vacancies fell by 21.1% but employment increased by 6.8% in Canada. FCC expects high wages and long-term labour shortages to continue in the sector.
